Squad News 2008

June 2008
In a great start to the summer season 9 athletes have qualified for inclusion in their respective regional squads - check out the athlete page.  It is not only the U17 and older athletes progressing there has also been several U15's athletes who have achieved the UK Top 100 marks so far this year as well.  This is a great achievement and with certainty for those athletes attending the Highland Regional Throws series of development days over the winter both the athletes and their coaches are beginning to see the benefits from attending the days.  Picking up new ideas and practical approaches towards throws training and being able to share ideas with other athletes and coaches is certainly showing the potential not only in the athletes in our regions but also in our coaching talent!

The second half of 2008 is certainly building up to be a big one, especially for our throwers.  With the AAA's and age group champs to come and HIPPO Grand Final to come we still have a lot to look forward to!

BOS Follow up Javelin Development Day
Highland and Grampian throws coaches were left in no doubt as to the benefits from attending the Bank of Scotland Follow-up Javelin Development Day which was held on Saturday the 15th March. Scottish National Javelin Coach, Robert Wilkie travelled to sunny Inverness from his base in Helensburgh to deliver the day at Queens Park Track. Working with 10 of the top junior javelin throwers in the Highlands and Grampian region, Robert introduced an innovative javelin specific warm-up, ran coach orientated sessions and organised small group workshops where our local coaches had the chance to work with the cream of our regional athletes.

The feedback has been tremendous and all attending coaches praised Robert for his delivery and course content on the day. Sharing of coaching knowledge is the key to the continual development of our local coaches assisting them in fulfilling their coaching aspirations, enabling them to produce higher level quality athletes. As the summer track season is only a few weeks away, it is fantastic that the athletes have had the chance to work with Robert both in early winter and pre-season, ensuring that they are able to maximise the benefits from their winter training and to spur them on for the looming outdoor season.

Cameron and Paterson, sponsors of Highland Athletics, are proud to support the Highland and Grampian Regional Throws Series which benefits the continual development of our local coaches aiming to produce International athletes.

Press release for Discus Development Day
A homecoming by International athlete Kirsty Law set the high standards for the Bank of Scotland Highland Regional Discus Development Day held last Saturday. Kirsty, who is a member of local club Inverness Harriers, is ranked as the UK No1 under 23 Discus thrower with a PB of 55.52m which also places her as one of the top ranking U23 Discus throwers in Europe. Kirsty took the time out of her busy training schedule to travel up to Inverness from her base in Glasgow to work with guest coach Willie Falconer, the Regional Throws Coach for Central Region, taking the athletes through discus specific drills, medicine ball and fault correction methods.

Some of Scotland's best junior discus throwers are based in the Highlands, Sam O’Kane, a Scottish Junior Internationalist, from Caithness AC is ranked as Scottish No1 U15 Boy and Kerri Cameron of Nairn AC is ranked Scottish No2 U15 Girl - just 1cm off first place! Both athletes attended the day along with Natasha Morris and Shannon Eyers both Caithness AC athletes, Kevin Saibu from Lochaber AC and Kelly Bodley from Ellon AC. All athletes agreed that it was inspiring to be able to train alongside and chat to Kirsty – a big thank you to Kirsty!

Another highlight of the day was that six throws coaches attended. Coach development is essential to ensure that the Highlands continue to produce national and international level athletes. Our winter throws series, which is backed by Cameron and Paterson, has been a great success such that Highland coaches and athletes have requested follow-up days and we are delighted to announce that both a javelin and hammer follow-up day has been scheduled for the 15th and 23rd March respectively. We also have in the pipeline a shot put development day and a Strength and Conditioning training day for which details will be announced later.
