On Saturday 12th May,
the 2007 North District Champion Throwers hailing from across the Highlands
& Islands threw a total distance of 746.90m, that is almost a half mile!
Nine athletes achieved the
Scottish Power of 10 Targets with 6 athletes being eligible as members of
their Scottish Athletics Regional Throws Squads. During the North District
Championships at Queens Park, Inverness, a plethora of personal bests were
set across all age groups and in the senior women shot put a Championship
Best Performance was recorded by Helen Cromarty who competed for Orkney AC. In the U13 girls competition,
Inverness Harrier Katie Stuart (u13) had a busy day, not only winning the
shot put by almost half a meter with a put of 6.12m but she also took gold
in the 100 & 200m. Shannon Eyers from Caithness AAC took the javelin title
with a throw of 18.91m and Nadine Froughi from North Uist AAC became the
discus Champion throwing 12.00m. In the U15 girls championships,
2 athletes achieved the Scottish Power of 10 Target, Michelle Munro from
Elgin AAC threw 32.84m to take the hammer crown and Kerri Cameron from Nairn
AAC won the discus throwing 23.11m taking the title by almost 5 meters. In
a close run javelin competition Lois Gray from Shetland AAC came out on top
taking the title with 22.02m and the shot put champion, with a throw of
8.13m, was new comer Carly Kirkpatrick from Orkney AC. In the U17 girls competition 3
athletes achieved the Scottish Power of 10 Target, 2 competitors in the
Hammer, champion Serena Walker who threw 34.01m and runner-up Kerry Annand
finishing with a throw of 30.01m. The third athlete, Claire Wilson from
Orkney AC won the shot put competition with a throw of 9.59m ranking her 4th
in Scotland this year. The 2007 discus champion Ashleigh Morris from
Caithness AAC threw
20.19m. Both U20 champions Karen Wood
(Orkney AC) and Claire Munro (Elgin AC) achieved the Scottish Power of 10
target, Karen threw 9.80m in the shot and Claire 34.44m in the hammer.
Sarah McConachie from Elgin AAC took the discus title throwing 28.06m. In the Senior Women’s
competition, Helen Cromarty set a new Championship Best Performance throwing
a personal best of 12.41m in the shot put and Shetland AAC coach and athlete
Elaine Park threw 37.43m to take the hammer title. Niculina Alexander from
Elgin AAC won the discus with a throw of 21.44m. In the U13 boys championship,
Lochaber AC athlete Kevin Sabiu threw 17.36m to take the discus title, Rory
Goodlad from Shetland AAC threw 25.43m to become the javelin Champion and in
a very close competition, Chris Riddell of Caithness AAC was crowned shot
put king when he beat Kevin Sabiu from Lochaber AC by only 2cm throwing a
best of 7.65m. In the U15 boys contests, Sam
O’Kane from Caithness AAC won two gold medals throwing 31.54m in the discus
and 9.66m in the shot put, he also achieved the Scottish Power of 10 target
for discus. Javelin Champion, Jordan Morrison from Shetland AAC threw
29.33m and Donald Morrison from North Uist won the hammer throwing 19.24m. Angus Milton from Elgin AAC won
the U17 hammer throwing 43.63m, his throw also betters the Scottish power of
10 Target. Shetland AAC athlete, Craig Sneddon took the unusual combination
of shot put and javelin, with throws of 9.85m and 31.58m respectively. Orkney AC athletes won all of
the U20 Men’s throws, Calvin Cooper won both the javelin and discus throwing
32.84m and 22.03m respectively and Dean Campbell won the shot throwing
8.70m. In the Senior Men Championship,
Gary Sweeney from Moray Road Runners took the shot put in12.49m and the
discus in 32.72m and narrowly missed out on making it a treble when he
finished second to Eddie MacKenzie from Aberdeen AC who threw 38.82m. Karl
Robertson from Shetland AAC took the hammer title with a throw of 43.50m. A great day of
